F1 jargon decoded: a beginner's glossary
DRS, undercut, box, dirty air, parc fermé — the essential Formula 1 terms explained in plain English.

Formula 1 commentary comes with its own language. Learn this handful of terms and you’ll understand 90% of what you hear.
Racing & strategy
- Box / boxing — to come into the pit lane. “Box, box” on team radio means pit now. (It comes from the German “Boxenstopp”.)
- Undercut — pitting for fresh tyres before a rival, using the extra grip to set fast laps and jump ahead when they stop.
- Overcut — the opposite: staying out longer on old tyres while a rival pits, hoping to emerge ahead.
- Stint — a run of laps on one set of tyres, between pit stops.
- Delta — a target time. A driver “on a delta” is deliberately lapping to a required pace (often behind the safety car).
The car & aerodynamics
- Downforce — aerodynamic pressure that pushes the car onto the track, giving grip through corners. More downforce = faster corners but a slower straight-line speed.
- Dirty air — the turbulent air behind a car that reduces the following car’s downforce, making it hard to follow closely.
- Slipstream / tow — the pocket of low-drag air directly behind a car that helps the one behind go faster on straights.
- Graining / degradation (“deg”) — tyres wearing or losing performance over a stint.
Rules & procedure
- DRS (Drag Reduction System) — a flap on the rear wing that opens to boost straight-line speed, allowed in designated zones when you’re within one second of the car ahead. (Note: the 2026 rules replace DRS with a different overtaking aid — see our regulations guide.)
- Parc fermé — a state, from the end of qualifying, in which teams can’t make significant setup changes to the car.
- Formation lap — the lap before the start, where cars get up to temperature and line up on the grid.
- Safety Car / VSC — deployed after an incident to slow the field; the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) does it via delta times without a physical car.
- Blue flags — shown to a slower car being lapped, telling it to let the leaders through.
Results
- Pole position — first on the grid, earned by the fastest qualifying lap.
- DNF — Did Not Finish (retired from the race).
- Fastest lap — the quickest single lap of the race; worth a bonus point if you finish in the top 10.
Keep this handy for your first few races and the commentary will suddenly make sense.
