That it’s happening at the same moment the rest of the grid is scrambling to copy one of Ferrari’s own aerodynamic innovations — the so-called rotating or “upside-down” rear wing — only sharpens the intrigue.

The wing everyone’s chasing

Ferrari’s rear wing concept, which alters its effective camber and loading through a rotating element rather than the more familiar flexing or drag-reduction mechanisms teams have used in recent years, has become one of the more closely watched pieces of hardware on the current grid. McLaren’s technical director Neil Houldal has been refreshingly candid about the fact his team was slower than they’d have liked to recognise the value in the concept, admitting to disappointment at not picking up on it as quickly as Ferrari did. That’s a notable admission from a team that has otherwise set the aerodynamic pace for the best part of two seasons — McLaren don’t tend to concede ground on development philosophy lightly, so the acknowledgement carries weight.

Mercedes, by contrast, appear to have quietly closed the book on their own version of the idea, choosing not to pursue what’s been nicknamed the “Macarena” wing for their 2026 challenger. That’s a meaningful data point in itself. Mercedes are not a team short on aerodynamic resource or wind-tunnel time, so a decision to abandon the concept suggests either that their own analysis found the trade-offs weren’t worth it for their car’s specific aero platform, or that the packaging and mechanical complexity didn’t justify the gain relative to other development avenues. Not every good idea transplants cleanly from one car to another — a wing solution that works with Ferrari’s rear-end philosophy and floor characteristics won’t necessarily deliver the same benefit bolted onto a Mercedes or McLaren concept with different sidepod and diffuser interactions.

Why this matters beyond one wing

The spread of the rotating rear wing concept is a useful reminder of how development actually works at the front of the grid: it’s rarely wholesale copying, it’s selective adoption filtered through each team’s own aerodynamic architecture. Ferrari pioneering the idea and gaining a temporary advantage from it is one thing; other teams successfully extracting the same lap-time benefit is another matter entirely, because the wing doesn’t operate in isolation. Its effectiveness depends on airflow conditioning further forward on the car, on how the floor and diffuser are using that air, and on the specific balance window each car’s suspension and setup philosophy is built around. That’s why Houldal’s admission is more interesting than a simple “we should have copied it sooner” — it points to McLaren having to redesign around the concept rather than simply appending it.

For Ferrari, though, this is where the story gets genuinely puzzling rather than just technically interesting. If the wing is a source of advantage, you’d expect that advantage to show up consistently — strong in practice, strong in qualifying, strong in the race. Instead, Leclerc’s frustration stems from a car that has looked ordinary in some sessions and startlingly strong in others, with no obvious pattern tied to track type, temperature or fuel load that the team has been able to identify publicly. That inconsistency is arguably more concerning for Ferrari than if the car were simply and predictably off the pace, because it suggests the team doesn’t yet have a full handle on what’s driving its own performance window — the rotating wing being a headline feature of the car, but not, on the available evidence, a complete explanation for the swings.

The wider context: Ferrari’s recurring correlation problem

This isn’t an entirely new theme for Ferrari. The team has, across recent seasons, occasionally struggled with correlation between what their simulation tools predict and what actually shows up on track — sometimes pleasantly, with a car that outperforms low expectations, and sometimes painfully, in the opposite direction. A driver as experienced and analytically engaged as Leclerc calling for an internal investigation isn’t a dramatic gesture; it’s exactly the kind of measured, evidence-seeking response you’d want from a lead driver who has been burned before by a team celebrating gains that don’t repeat, or downplaying weekends that later look better than expected. His comments should be read less as a criticism of the car’s raw pace and more as a demand for Ferrari to close the gap between what they think they know about the SF-26 and what it’s actually doing on a Saturday afternoon.
