A deployment shortfall that manifests specifically on the straights is not a rounding error; it’s the kind of deficit that shows up directly in lap time, in overtaking ability, and in defensive capability. For a driver of Russell’s standing — Mercedes’ senior representative, a driver who has built his reputation on consistency and technical feedback — persistently losing out to his rookie team-mate in this specific, quantifiable way is more than an inconvenience.
